PostgreSQL Development Services

Database design for new applications, migrations from the system you run today, and queries that stopped being fast.

What We Do With PostgreSQL

Nobody buys a database on its own. The work arrives as a migration, a slow screen, or a new application that needs its data shaped properly.

The Database Behind a Business Application

Orders, stock, customers, invoices. We design the tables and the rules between them before the screens are built, because the shape of the data decides what the application can do later.

Moving Off MySQL, SQL Server or Access

Migrations from another database, including the Access file that one person keeps on their desktop. The data goes across with its history, and the old system keeps running until the new one is proven.

Queries That Got Slower as the Data Grew

A screen that opened instantly two years ago and now takes thirty seconds. We measure which query is costing the time and fix that, which is usually an index or a rewritten query rather than a bigger server.

Reporting Without Slowing the Live System

Month-end reports that lock up the screens everyone else is working in. We separate the reporting load from the live load so one stops blocking the other.

Rules the Data Cannot Break

A stock figure that cannot go below zero, an invoice that cannot exist without a customer, a code that cannot be used twice. The database refuses the bad record rather than storing it and hoping.

Backups You Can Restore From

A backup nobody has ever restored is a file, not a backup. We set up the schedule, test the restore, and write down the steps for whoever has to do it at two in the morning.

Where Are You Starting From

Both situations are routine for us. Tell us which one applies and we will shape the first call around it.

From First Call to Project Start

The process runs in five steps, in the same order on every project. You can stop after any of them.

1

Short Phone Call

15 Minutes

You describe what the data is and what is going wrong with it. We ask a few questions and tell you whether the problem is the database, the application on top of it, or neither. If it is neither, you hear that on the same call.

2

Technical Review

45-60 Minutes

We go through the detail together. How much data there is, how fast it grows, which queries hurt, what writes to it, who reports from it, and what has to keep running while the work is done.

3

Scope Preparation

Before Any Commitment

You receive a document that states what will be built, in what order, on what timeline, and at what cost. You read it before anyone signs anything.

4

Agreement Signing

One Document

The agreed scope becomes a signed contract. The confidentiality and intellectual property terms are set out in the same document, rather than in a separate one or at a later stage.

5

Project Start

Same Month

Work starts and we deliver at regular intervals. Where a migration is involved it runs on a copy first, so you see the result before anything moves in production.

What You Get From It

You do not need the technical side to judge this. Here is what changes on the business side.

Reports Stop Taking Minutes

The number somebody needs in a meeting arrives while the meeting is still going. Most of that gain comes from fixing how the data is asked for rather than from a faster machine.

Wrong Records Stop Getting In

The rules live in the database rather than in each screen that writes to it. A record that breaks one of them is refused, so the error is caught when it happens rather than found in a report months later.

It Keeps Up as the Business Grows

PostgreSQL runs the databases of companies far larger than yours. Growing from thousands of rows to millions is a tuning job rather than a reason to replace the system.

No Licence Fee Per Server

PostgreSQL is open source and free to run, on as many servers as you need. What you pay for is the work and the hosting, not a seat count or a core count.

You Can Go Back to a Point in Time

If somebody deletes the wrong thing on a Tuesday afternoon, the database can be brought back to the minute before it happened rather than to last night.

A Developer Market You Can Hire From

PostgreSQL is one of the most widely used databases there is. If you bring the work in house or add a second supplier later, you are hiring from a wide market rather than a narrow one.

Choosing a PostgreSQL Development Company

The questions to put to anyone who touches your database, and the commitments we make on each of them.

We Measure Before Adding Hardware

A bigger server is the most expensive way to fix a slow query and it usually buys a few months. We find what is actually costing the time and tell you what the smaller fix is.

The Data Model Comes Before the Screens

A screen is easy to change later and a table full of production data is not. We agree how the data is shaped before anybody draws an interface on top of it.

A Migration Runs Twice Before It Runs Once

Every migration is rehearsed on a copy and the result is compared against the system you run today. The live switch happens only after the rehearsal matches.

Scope Before Signature

You know the scope, the timeline and the price before you commit. We would rather lose the project at the scoping stage than argue about what was included halfway through it.

Code Ownership in Writing

Who owns the code, and whether we may name the work as a reference, are both settled in the contract before the first line is written.

Backups Are Tested, Not Assumed

We restore from the backup in front of you at least once, so the recovery plan is something you have seen work rather than something written on a page.

Frequently Asked Questions

PostgreSQL is the part of a system that holds the data and enforces what is allowed to be true about it. A stock level, an order, an invoice line and the relationship between them all live there, and the rules can live there too rather than being repeated in every screen that writes a record.

That is why the database usually outlives the application in front of it. Screens get rebuilt, the data stays. When a business application is built on it we normally write the application layer in PHP or Node.js, and the choice is something you hear on the first call rather than after the work has started.

A Fifteen-Minute Call Is Enough to Start

Tell us what the data is and where it hurts. If the fix is smaller than the project you came to ask about, you will hear that on the first call.
