Question 1

What should I look for in a software development company?

Accepted Answer

Look at whether they put the scope in writing before you sign. Ask who owns the code. Ask whether the finished system runs somewhere you can reach without them. And pay attention to who is in the meeting, because a salesperson who cannot answer a technical question is the same gap you will be dealing with for the rest of the project.

Question 2

How much does a project cost?

Accepted Answer

There is no price list, because the scope decides it. How many screens there are, who logs in, which other systems it has to talk to and who maintains the content all move the number. After the first call and the technical review you get a document with the price and the timeline in it, and you read that before anything is signed.

Question 3

How long does it take?

Accepted Answer

The scope document gives you a date, and it is written after we have seen what the work actually involves rather than before. What moves that date is usually not the building. It is how quickly content, logins and approvals come back from your side, so we agree who is responsible for what at the start.

Question 4

Nobody on our team is technical. Can we still work with you?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and most of the companies we build for are in exactly that position. You describe what the business needs to do, we make the technical decisions and explain each one in plain language. If a choice has a cost attached to it, you hear what it is before it is made. The person you deal with is a technical representative who knows your project, not an account manager relaying questions.

Question 5

Do you sign a non-disclosure agreement?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The confidentiality terms are part of the contract signed before development begins rather than a separate step. Whether we may name the work as a reference is settled in the same document, so nothing goes onto our site without your agreement.

Question 6

Do you work on a fixed price or on a day rate?

Accepted Answer

Both, and the nature of the work decides which fits. Where the scope is clear we quote a fixed price, because carrying that risk is our job. Where the scope will keep shaping itself around real use, a dedicated team is the more honest arrangement. Which one we recommend, and why, is written in the scope document.

Question 7

Do you work with companies abroad?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a large part of our work is international. Calls, documents and the comments inside the code are in English. Where there is a time difference we agree the overlapping hours at the start, so getting an answer to a question does not cost you a day.

Question 8

Do you support the system after the project ends?

Accepted Answer

We do, but it is not compulsory. Support is set up as a separate agreement that states what it covers. Because the code is yours and written so another team can read it, you can continue with someone else whenever you want to.

Question 9

Can we see work you have done before?

Accepted Answer

We show what we are allowed to show during the call. Some of our clients prefer not to be named, and we describe that work without naming the company. The case studies published on this site are there with the client agreeing to it, and there are no invented figures or logos on them.

Question 10

What happens if the project stops halfway?

Accepted Answer

The code sits somewhere you can reach from the first day rather than arriving as a package at the end. You see working software at regular intervals during the build, so where the work actually stands is never a matter of trust. If we part ways you are left with a readable codebase and a written scope document, which is what another team needs to carry on.

Question 11

Who owns the code?

Accepted Answer

The source code is yours. Ownership of the software transfers to you under the terms of the contract once development is complete and payment has been made in full. Those terms, and the confidentiality clauses, are in the contract signed before development begins.
